Houston Apartments Hit Hard by Ike
On September 13, Hurricane Ike made headlines as this powerful Category 3 storm ravaged the Texas coastline. The Houston Chronicle's recent analysis of city data brings sobering news about Ike's effect on the local apartment industry and the city's renters.
Ike damaged more than half of Houston's 2,000 apartment complexes, according to the analysis, and at least 145 complexes suffered severe damage, such as missing roofs, damaged walls, or soaked carpets. These severely damaged buildings were located mostly in the city's vulnerable areas and housed over 93,000 renters. More than half of Houstonians rent their homes, a figure that's significantly higher than the national Census estimate of one-third.
