As with most anything, if a rental ad looks too good to be true, it probably is. That's one of the points behind a new consumer alert issued by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) aimed at helping apartment hunters avoid rental scams.
Some red flags, such as advertising an apartment for very low rent, should make you skeptical, but others, such as requiring you to wire money upfront, should be a clear sign to look elsewhere, the alert warns.
