A man called 911 last night with an urgent report: his grandmother was holding a shotgun to his sister's head in their Morristown, New Jersey apartment. Fortunately, the report turned out to be nothing but pure fiction, according to the Daily Record.
That doesn't mean there wasn't a crime, however.
Police are looking to arrest the person or persons behind the apparent "swatting" -- a prank in which a caller manipulates the emergency response system to get police to order a sizable response to the site of a fake crime-in-progress. While no tenant at the New Jersey building was actually in danger, many tenants were reportedly forced to evacuate their apartments for hours, putting everyone on edge.
There is no mention of a motive behind the swatting or a reason this particular apartment was chosen as the target. As part of the investigation, police are looking into the true origin of the 911 call, which was made to look like it came from the apartment.
