Spring for a New Battery As You Spring Ahead

By , About.com GuideMarch 13, 2010

Tonight, we "spring ahead" to Daylight Saving Time by moving the clocks forward one hour from 2 a.m. to 3 a.m. But there's something else even more important that you shouldn't forget to do if you live in an apartment.

Fire chiefs across the United States recommend using this opportunity to change the batteries in your apartment's smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. If a detector doesn't have a working battery in it, it's of no use as an alert in the unfortunate event of a fire. Replacing the battery takes about as much effort as adjusting your clocks, and it may just save a life.
