Have you ever referred an apartment hunter to your landlord, who then signed a lease with that person? If so, it's a win-win situation. The landlord is glad to have found a good tenant for a vacancy, and your friend is happy to have found the right apartment to call home.
What about you, though? Other than the satisfaction of knowing you made a deal happen, do you think you deserve a referral fee from the landlord for your efforts?
Arizona believes so, but since 1999 state law has capped the amount a tenant can receive at $100 per referral, up to six times per year. According to a report from the Verde Independent, legislators are considering increasing the cap to $200, up to five times per year.
Do you agree with a government-imposed cap on tenant referrals, or should the market be allowed to drive the fee?
