Carnegie Hall Loses Its Duchess After More Than 50 Years

A year and a half ago, I blogged about how Editta Sherman, a renowned photographer and long-time tenant of a rent-controlled apartment above New York's Carnegie Hall was being asked to give up her home to make way for an expansion project. The so-called "Duchess of Carnegie" refused to leave, however, rejecting Carnegie Hall's offer to pay relocation expenses and any excess rent for life.

After more than 50 years living in her studio loft, Ms. Sherman decided to move out yesterday. According to a report in the New York Post, the former holdout has agreed to move to an apartment two blocks away at Carnegie Hall's expense.
