One advantage of living in an apartment building is that you have neighbors down the hall and on different floors who may be able to warn, if not rescue, you if a fire or other emergency occurs.
Just the other day, for example, neighbors came to the aid of their fellow apartment dwellers when a fire broke out on the second floor of a four-story building in Boston. According to a report from The Boston Globe, if it weren't for two neighbors' quick thinking and putting themselves at risk, it's possible all the tenants wouldn't have reached safety.
Putting yourself in harm's way to help others is commendable and heroic. But before you leap into a dangerous situation, don't neglect your own safety. Not only do you want to stay safe, but you can't save others if you become a victim yourself.
