Landlords and Rules Aimed at Children

A relative latecomer to the Fair Housing Act, "familial status" is a protected class that refers to the presence of at least one child under 18 in a household. So, landlords who discriminate based on familial status may be violating federal law.

Sometimes, a landlord is justified in creating and enforcing a rule that singles out children. If there's a rule at your apartment complex aimed at children that you don't like, here's how to find out if it's legal.
