When it comes to bathroom decor, many people overlook the toilet seat. But you can probably replace a generic toilet seat with a decorative toilet seat that better matches your bathroom decor.
Chances are, your apartment's bathroom will come with a toilet bowl that has a plain white seat made of polypropelene or heavy-duty plastic. Consider replacing it with a more decorative toilet seat. Not only will it enhance your bathroom decor, but some themed or whimsical toilet seats may even serve as a conversation piece with guests.
Find the Right Decorative Toilet Seat
If you're looking to replace your bland toilet seat with something more interesting, here are some points to consider:
Pick a material and color. If you've got wooden features in your bathroom, consider a toilet seat made with a similar or complementary wood finish. They're popular enough that you'll find them at stores such as The Home Depot, Lowe's, and Wal-Mart. If you go with standard polypropelene or plastic, consider a color other than white. For instance, if your bathroom hardware and floor is black and white but your window treatments, shower curtain, and wall decor feature aqua, consider buying a toilet seat to match the aqua color.
Consider a theme or pattern. Feeling more adventurous? Skip the solids and go with a pattern or a theme, such as seats that have colorful dolphins, dollar bills, or dogs. Some seats also have designs, such as flowers or seashells, sculpted into the seat itself.
It may be hard to find such decorative or whimsical seats in hardware stores, but you may have luck at stores such as Target, Kmart, or Bed Bath & Beyond. You can also search for decorative seats online.
Pay attention to the hinges. Many polypropelene seats have the hinges hidden with plastic covers. With other seats, such as wooden ones, the hinges and other metal parts or exposed. It's a subtlety, but consider matching the general color of these parts with other similar features in your bathroom. For instance, if your cabinetry has nickel knobs, handles, and other features, get a seat that has a nickel or silver color; if it has bronze features, get a seat with a bronze or gold color.
Get the right size. Make sure you buy the right size toilet seat. There are two standard sizes, which are named for their general shape: round and elongated. Before you go shopping, take a quick look at your toilet seat. If it looks more like an oval than a circle, you probably need an elongated seat.
