As its name implies, wall decor primarily serves a decorative function. But often enough, there's a secondary purpose for putting something up on your wall.

As you decorate or redecorate your apartment and look for wall decor ideas, keep these secondary purposes in mind as they might give you ideas on how to personalize your space.

Secondary Purposes of Wall Decor

In addition to being decorative, wall decor can serve other purposes, such as:

  • Storage and display. You can affix items to your walls that store and/or display other decorative items that you own. Examples: shelving, wall curios.

  • Religious identification and devotion. Some items meant for walls show an affiliation with a certain religion or express a dedication to its principles. Examples: Christmas wreath, Ketubah.

  • Likes and interests. You might choose to include items in your wall decor that indicate your favorite activities, hobbies, or pastimes. Examples: a sports team poster, a framed autographed program from a concert or show.

  • Beliefs and causes. Some items on an apartment wall reveal what's important to its inhabitant. Examples: a political party or candidate banner, a pro-environment or anti-domestic violence poster.

  • Hopes and achievements. If you've accomplished a goal or you aspire to, you might consider documenting this in your wall decor. Examples: diplomas and certificates, motivational sayings.

  • Organization and convenience. Some items make life easier or help you stay on top of things. Examples: mirror, wall calendar, bulletin board, clock, coat rack.

  • Life and background. Many apartment dwellers like to include items from their past and present to display on their walls. Examples: family photos, heirlooms.

Keep these secondary purposes of wall decor in mind when you decorate your apartment. If you've already started to decorate your apartment walls, take a moment to look at each item and see if it's serving a secondary purpose.
