If you're the type who tries to help others when they're in harm's way, any roommate or neighbor would be lucky to have you around during a disaster or any type of emergency. But before you extend a helping hand to someone who needs it, don't neglect your own safety. Emergencies naturally inspire people to act quickly, and so it's easy to disregard the potential dangers that a situation poses.
For example, in March 2010, a tenant at an apartment building in London, Ontario came to the aid of a couple trying to free a dog that had gotten stuck between elevator doors. According to a report from the London Free Press, there was much commotion when the rescuer pushed against the door and fell three floors down the shaft. The man was hospitalized but, luckily, didn't suffer serious injuries.
As this example shows, it's important to try to act cautiously even under the pressure of an emergency. Taking your own safety into account as you attempt to rescue others doesn't just help ensure that you avoid harm, but it also increases the chances that your efforts in saving a victim will prove successful.
