Definition: Blockbusting is the practice of frightening white homeowners into speedily selling their houses, often at a lower price. Real estate agents frighten white homeowners by playing to fears that black people are moving into the neighborhood and driving down property value. Afterwards, the agents resell the house at a much higher price, often to African Americans. This hurts both white people, who lose on their home investments, and black people, who are presented with a limited choice of homes at inflated prices.
Also Known As: panic peddling
