If you have children, they probably enjoy spending time in a playground, whether it's at school, in a nearby park, or perhaps an amenity at your own apartment complex. Playgrounds are fun, but they also can be dangerous, which is why it's so important for kids to learn about playground safety at a young age.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) offers a free book for parents to read with their young children (ages 3-5) on playground safety. The book, entitled Little Big Kids, is available exclusively as a PDF download. You can save the book to your computer to read on the screen or print a copy.

The book delivers its tips on playground safety through the inclusion of stories and poems written by actual children. Using direct child-to-child inspiration as opposed to presenting playground safety as a set of "adult rules and regulations" is more likely to influence children's minds, according to the CPSC.

Make-believe characters such as Say-hey, a talking frog, along with an artist's visual renderings of these characters interacting with kids in a playground setting make the book appealing to youngsters. The book's ultimate message to readers is that even young kids can spot hazards and make smart decisions to avoid playground safety risks -- as long as they're armed with the right information.
