Furniture that performs two tasks at once is enough to make the decorator in all of us weep for joy. Storage trunks are the kings of such furnishing. Their size is ideal for storing larger items and as well as acting as seating or a coffee table. These are my top picks, based on both design and function, for storage trunks. (Please note that I have not personally tested any of them. If you have any personal experience with any item on the list, I invite you to write a mini review.)

1. Milano Tuscany Trunk

Many trunks look clunky and, if a personality could be ascribed to it, oafish. This trunk, from Overstock.com, has a very elegant design that reminds me more of a coffee table and less of a, well, trunk.

2. Rectangular Trunk with Cushioned Lid

From Overstock.com, this trunk, as the name suggests, has a cushioned lid that comes in four different colors. Unlike the more typical chests, this one has a cozier look and the cushion makes it more inviting for seating.

3. Black Leather Storage Bench

Another fine piece from Overstock.com, this trunk is padded in aniline black leather, making it a good choice for seating. According to Furniture Guide Fred Albert, aniline leather is “the most supple and sumptuous of leather on the market.” Take note of the warning on the site, though: aniline leather can’t handle too much sunlight.

4. Wood Storage Trunk

More affordable than some of the other trunks, this cleanly designed wooden trunk, from Target, is on the smaller side and has handles for easy carrying. It’s perfect if your shoebox apartment is more of a matchbox, or if you’re looking for a piece that’ll fit within budget.

5. Collegiate Trunk

The name says it all. This trunk, from Stacks and Stacks, is styled in the typical manner one finds in a dorm room—not necessarily a bad thing if you’re going for a certain look in your decor. According to site reviews, it stands up well against dragging and moving, which means it’ll make a good coffee table for throwing your legs on top.

6. Mission Storage Bench

This wooden trunk, from Target, has a honeyed color finish and "classic mission styling," according to Target's website. More elegant than boxy, this trunk could double as a coffee table—and it's not too expensive.
